In a year FICMA will be a fourth century old. When I look back I find wonderful moments of cinema, struggle, illusions and defense of life and environment. I meet again with old friends that gave me their soul, heart and their unfailing support. And after the years you realize that they remain part of the whole, even if they are not physically present.
Twenty-four years ago, I would have never imagined that the International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) would have been declared a "pioneering and reference Festival" by the Organization of American States (OAS). I couldn’t have also planned that joining efforts, wills and synergies, FICMA would be traveling thought many of its member States, starting in Washington in the beginning of 2018, showing an itinerant exhibition of the best of this edition and the next ones. 8 years ago, I also found myself in this situation, when UN Environment proposed us to work together using audiovisuals to promote environmental education between people, especially the young ones. That is why, for 4 years, FICMA together with UN Environment Mexico, and this year also with the Canacintra Foundation, we have been able to bring films to more than 40 cities in the country, capitals and small towns, schools and universities; the best of FICMA to hundreds of thousands of spectators of all ages.
You cannot imagine how much emotion and joy I feel knowing that our grain of sand, together with other thousands that work every day for a better and sustainable planet is becoming a mountain, strong and magnificent, knowing that we are on the right track.
But all this has been and is possible thanks to the thousands of contributors - producers, directors, distributors - who believe in FICMA, to the public and private institutions that renew their trust, to the companies that are committed to a more sustainable society and support this initiative, to the people who year after year, make an impression and encourage us to think about the next edition, before the end of the current. That is why from this year on, I would like to give in hand a "seed" to each person who comes to the Festival, so that together we keep sowing principles, creation and life, being the best way to counteract end, destruction and death. And so, drop by drop, grain to grain, cuddle after cuddle, we will take care of them so that they grow in our houses, in our cities, in our hearts, feeding and refreshing the spirit of protection, love, dialogue, knowledge, freedom, non-violence and dignity, values that our societies need more and more.
This way was born EVERY CLASSROOM, A CINEMA, a pleasant and ambitious window that brings environmental cinema to all the schools in Catalonia, Spain and Latin America using new technologies, so that teachers can work with audiovisual as a tool for entertainment and education. And today using this illusion of creating and innovating FICMARKET is born, the first Environmental Audiovisual Market in the world, which will forge alliances and build bridges between all industry actors, in order to help in the distribution and acquisition of the films that have participated or sign up during all year!
We love to create, we love challenges, and we love to give!
I could tell many, many more things, good and not so good, but if there is something I am sure, convinced and committed, is that we will keep giving because that has always been our premise and leitmotiv.
Finally, I would like to have some words for two great persons, two close friends, two cinema and environment virtuoso who for a few months are no longer among us anymore. But you can be sure, dear friends Miguel Camacho and Rob Stewart that you are not only in my heart, but in the hearts of all people that as you have, struggle for a fair, free and more human planet.
The Festival is for you!
The 24th edition of the International Environmental Film Festival of Catalonia is here. FICMA, a world pioneering festival in its genre, is consolidated as a reference in environmental documentary and as an innovative festival, which works films and its industry and also content and environmental education in different activities, using new technologies.
FICMA is a festival that goes beyond being a window of diffusion and promotion. FICMA is a source of inspiration, of creation of values that generates social changes.
A space where entertainment becomes at the same time, reflection, trying to transform through the culture, the cinema and the audiovisual industry, our society and the environment, making our planet a more habitable place.
More than 2500 productions have been submitted this year to be part of the festival: a great success that shows the good health of audiovisual productions with an environmental and social message.
This year we have a program with high quality films and workshops and conferences. A program aimed to all ages: children (the PETIT FICMA section and the educational section EVERY CLASSROOM, A CINEMA, which reaches all schools in the country), the young audience (the University Route session) and, of course, the adult and general public.
This year FICMA opens new windows. The first is the Catalan Documentary Official Section that is born to publicize our industry and promote it internationally. The other is FICMARKET, a space for professionals that offers to the films submitted to FICMA a chance to find distribution and exhibition. Different television channels and important distributors participate in this proposal that will last 10 months and starts with the 24th edition of FICMA.
The festival hashtag of this edition is #InItsSkin: FICMA wants to talk about the dignity of living beings. To respect, to care and to live with all living beings; appreciating life is the only way to advance peacefully and with justice.
Here is this new edition, thanks to all the team that has made possible these 10 days of FICMA – a festival that will continue to offer, throughout the year, different activities in the rest of the country – and thanks to all the institutions and companies that have given support to make FICMA 2017 real.
Enjoy the festival
Jean-Luc Godard used to say that photography is true and that cinema is true 24 times per second. Cinema opens a window to reality that helps us connecting worlds, situations, conflicts. Cinema also calls for reflection and critical awareness. In that sense, the International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) has become a platform that combines artistic quality and social and environmental commitment.
This year FICMA celebrates its 24th edition from 2 to 10 November in different areas of Barcelona. The contest offers a wide selection of documentaries, features and short films of high quality that show the growing interest in the metamorphosis of our planet. And the only responsible is the human being.
Humans have affected Earth’s environment and we need to learn to love it. That is why we highlight the pedagogical and informational side of the festival. Besides the official section, FICMA brings films to schools and universities throughout the year. As well the Petit FICMA section offers workshops and screenings for children and families.
Therefore, I congratulate FICMA’s team on promoting again the audiovisual sector and on the rigour and commitment they have worked for almost a quarter of a century. Now more than ever, we need responsible cinema that promotes awareness about what is with no doubt our most precious heritage.
If a cultural event such as the International Environmental Film Festival of Barcelona (FICMA) reaches its 24th edition is for sure because behind there is an excellent team that put their heart in each edition. But professionalism is not enough to explain its success. I think it is because the good work benefits a project that fills a space in each visitor’s life.
FICMA has achieved all these years to provide hope, ideas and reflections on how to reach a better relationship with the environment to which we all belong. I'm sure that in this very special year for Barcelona it will do it again. This year we have been shaken by an attack that has made us feel close to death, to the absurdity of murder, the rage of impotence but it has also shown us, once again, that Barcelona is a brave city, a sensitive and determined city who is not intimidated by any challenge.
The films that will be screened at FICMA reflect all these feelings. Its characters are visionaries, they are neighbors, they are entrepreneurs; they are observers of nature. They are people who try to have a better and fairer society through a new relationship with the environment. They do it facing problems without arrogance but without caving in, decided to transform a society that is still far from our aspirations.
FICMA allows us to live again their experiences, to better understand the challenges we are facing, to dream, to think, to refill us emotionally and to visualize what a better society can be like. And FICMA does it making us enjoy! That is why it is a unique combination.
FICMA is a cornerstone of Barcelona's cultural policy to promote a social and environmental transformation that we need to achieve a socially and environmentally more just society. That is why I want to thank all the team that makes it possible and I wish many citizens will enjoy it.
I am pleased to write these words for the 24th edition of the International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) in which Ecoembes participates for the first time as an active collaborator. Cinema is an artistic expression and FICMA has the dimension of reflection, debate, awareness and education of the environment and its related social causes. FICMA is not just a message that lasts for a week of festival, it is a yearlong message projecting its films in classrooms, towns and cities. We are pleased that the collaboration of Ecoembes contributes specifically to this commitment of permanence of FICMA’s message.
Education and environmental awareness are key to collaboration and co-responsibility in the 7 “R” of circular economy: redesign, reduce, reuse, renew, repair, recycle and recover; central axes of Ecoembes message. For this reason, we promote environmental education projects and activities in schools and since this year together with SEO/BirdLife, we have started the project "LIBERA, Nature without Trash", a campaign to raise awareness and act against littering to achieve a free of waste natural environment. To further promote these messages we invite the public to participate and benefit from the festival.
Thanks to FICMA’s team, the members of the jury and the participating films, to once again bring to Barcelona one of the best environmental film selections in the world.
Best wishes of success for this Festival’s edition which will strengthen the path to the celebration of its 25 years in 2018.
The knowledge-generation and the study of science are fundamental to find solutions to the great challenges of humanity. In order to promote good practices in health, nutrition, housing, environment, energy, education and to achieve sustainable progress in society, we need to deepen our own and collective conscience, as well as a scientific culture of excellence.
CosmoCaixa offers educational activities to strengthen science among the youngest; workshops for families and a wide program of scientific promotion to reach the interested public. Debates, conferences and talks are meant to reflect the objectives of sustainable development in order to encourage the search for the needed solutions to move towards a more just society.
That is why CosmoCaixa hosts FICMA, a world reference in environmental cinema but also in social and scientific purposes. In addition to a space especially dedicated to screen short films to the school community, this year there will be a meeting of professionals in technologies and programs of conservation of species. As well, CosmoCaixa will held the closing ceremony of FICMA’s twenty-fourth edition screening the film Unchained and listening to Carol’s Buckley scientific talks. FICMA enriches CosmoCaixa’s program and helps us to achieve one of our challenges: to increase the scientific culture of society and to stimulate knowledge
