The first day of FICMA, back in 1993, it rained a lot. I remember my dear friend Thomas Münzer telling me on the flooding steps of the cinema: "What gets off on the wrong foot, ends off on the right foot". It was the nature itself, in all its splendor, welcoming us! Wow, there are so many stories after two and a half decades!
In the year 2000, thinking about today was far and even if computers did not collapse and there was no end of the world - as the pessimists predicted-, the mountains of waste continued to grow, as well as consumption, savage materialism and sacking of our lands and seas. We are living difficult times, I hear some people say: "I want to get off the world, but I cannot find a stop."
The culture, the solidarity and the empathy are values that are not listed in that stock exchange controlled by the merchants of the dollar, the oil and the hunger. Malthus said that "after a period of barbarism comes one of culture", just looking around us, we realize in what stage we are and where we should go. The rebirth of fascism in Europe and in the world just shows us that it is necessary, urgent, essential, to do a U-turn, to change the direction of this fuel car traveling at an excessive speed towards nothing.
History is there. It must not be forgotten how painful for humanity has been to conquer its universal rights, freedom of expression and election. Are we going to renounce to these rights, even if some people are decided to bury the Historic Memory, deny the evidence of climate change or state that bullfighting is an art and not a massacre?
It's time to stand up and say STOP! to barbarism.
Having reached the 25th edition is a small battle won to narrow minded positions, to false ecologists and that allows us to keep open that window where the (Golden) Sun comes letting us breathe hope, in front of the mental pollution and the gag, that push incessantly to lockup thoughts, musicians, tweeters and democracy itself. Let's be together; it is key and the best way to get the change!
Thanks to those who accompany us, support us and believe in us, to those who every year have a date with FICMA to reflect, debate and propose; the cinema is a very powerful weapon to defeat mediocrity and raise awareness. Thanks also to those who deny us and put obstacles along the path, these make us stronger every day.
Thomas, my friend, I don’t know how much water has to flow under the bridge, but after 25 years, every day we are more, I can tell you that the boy who came to the Petit FICMA with his father, he is still coming and he is 30 years old. Every edition that I see him, I wonder: something we have done well, don’t you think so?
If you have read this far, I would like to share with you a sentence that I carry with me like an amulet: "People that do not live as they think, end up thinking how they live".
Let's celebrate cinema, life and FICMA.
25 years promoting entertainment as a tool to raise awareness and educate. How? Through art and cinema: showing stories and allowing spectators to empathize with them and feel transformed after watching a movie. By presenting films that speak about us, about our planet, cinema that creates awareness, cinema looking for a change to make this planet a more habitable place for all, for every living being.
I want to pay a tribute and give my deepest gratitude to all the filmmakers who have presented their films at the Festival all these years. They have been the ones who have given sense to our work and have inspired us to create activities and actions to be shared with the society and all together achieve this change.
Thanks to all this loyal audience, that year after year has accompanied us in each screening and also to the public and private institutions that have supported us and have made it possible to get until here, till the 25th edition.
The 25th FICMA has a selection of last year best films as well as various activities where we will develop current topics so that we can apply sustainable practices in our day to day life, and many surprises that you will discover in this catalog.
Cinema and Education, Education with Cinema for everybody and especially for the little ones; PETIT FICMA with its films and funny workshops for families and schools that will help them to discover a bit more our planet and be more respectful with it: create value in our actions; this is what makes the difference and empowers individuals and society.
Thanks to all guests and Golden Suns who during these 25 years have shared their experiences and works inspiring us all.
Let's celebrate! Let's celebrate the cinema, life and FICMA, the Film Festival that celebrates life.
Have a nice Festival.
Achieving a quarter of a century is a very important milestone. Firstly, I would like to congratulate the International Environmental Film Festival of Catalonia for its 25 years of life. FICMA is one of the most important cultural and social event in the country. The festival is an essential vehicle to raise social awareness about the environmental challenges and try to find solutions.
FICMA activities during these days encourage and shake consciences. However, there is something even more interesting. The festival reaches schools, universities and the general public throughout the year. FICMA’s informational vocation is very admirable and we think that it is essential to make people aware of the necessity to take care of the planet.
Emotions are a very effective tool to reach people and get their commitment with the environment, in this case through cinema. Thus, the Catalonia’s Department of Territory and Sustainability invites FICMA to keep enthusiasm and accuracy within this spirit of diffusion and collective awareness.
I wish you a magnificent 25th Festival’s edition and hope that FICMA will be a reference for many more years.
Waking up consciences. This is the aim of the International Environtmental Film Festival (FICMA), which turns 25 this year. It has been a quarter of a century of intense pedagogical work brought by the emotions of cinema. Fiction or documentary stories that open our eyes to what it is happening with the environment and make us aware of the need to protect our planet. Culture is a transformation tool to develop a more mature, fair and respectful society.
Currently, the majority of film competitions includes an environmental section. However, it is important to remember that FICMA was the first festival specialized in environmental films worldwide. It has an important international recognition, being awarded by the Organization of American States (OAS) as a "reference and pioneering Festival". FICMA has crossed borders and it has been present abroad for some years. In 2018, the festival has been on tour to Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia, contributing to the international projection of the Catalan culture, which is one of the priorities of our cultural policy.
On the other hand, the festival works together with the UN Environment Programme promoting environmental education, paying special attention to children – the population of the future - through activities such as "Each classroom a cinema", an effective tool to discuss environmental issues at schools. Starting this year, the festival will be present in several prisons supporting the inclusive role of culture.
Furthermore, the 25th edition will address for the first time, one of the major challenges of filming: the sustainability of the film industry, which is one of the most polluting. Therefore, FICMA has organized a professional day to discuss about the eco-responsible practices that film production could adopt to reduce the impact on the environment. Culture is a motor for economic development but it must also be a sustainable ecosystem.
A careful programme, current controversial topics, reflection, education, emotion... FICMA should not leave us indifferent. For all that, I can only congratulate the Festival organizers, for their curiosity and generosity, as well as the thousands of participants, who make it a reality every year; filmmakers, producers, distributors and the audience, always loyal and soul of the Festival. Enjoy FICMA!
The Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) reaches a quarter of a century. Twenty-five years of a consolidated project, inspired by a brave Barcelona, turned into a pioneer and a reference of a genre which goes beyond entertainment to become a tool that opens minds and creates consciousness.
Images, feelings and emotions to express our relationship with nature and our behavior towards a world where climate change, local pollution or the loss of biodiversity are already undeniably real. The audiovisual tool is a mirror that allows us to recognize ourselves as what we are, executioners of our own land forcing us to rethink our relationship with the rest of the animals and living beings of a planet that is not only ours. As a society, we are responsible and it is unavoidable to face deep and urgent changes, to reverse consumerism and achieve an energy transition that will generate a more sustainable planet. That is why it is so important that cultural initiatives such as FICMA succeed every edition and increase year after year its international reputation, defending the environment as a vital aim.
The scope of the necessary transformation is so huge that we can not do it only with a set of technological or management recipes; art and culture play a fundamental role because they help us to change habits, values, priorities and other basic elements to educate society in love and respect for all kinds of life. It is difficult but at the same time essential, to understand that evolution involves confronting ideas and harming certain interests but we must be able to talk, dialogue and even discuss to reach a single possible conclusion: there is no turning back but we are still on time. And there is no other way to face it.
Proposals, examples, reflections and stories played by neighbours, entrepreneurs, children, visionaries, philosophers, scientists... Cinema, theater, literature and arts in general allow us to live, observe and understand different points of view. There is no better way to reach souls.
This is the reason why I am so proud of FICMA. During all this years the festival has struggled to educate us, to make us reflect and to help us to face environmental challenges from solidarity, union and with love for our environment. FICMA has always a special window opened to new artists and artistic initiatives inspired by social activists. Thanks to all. Thank you very much to the FICMA team that makes it possible, for your enthusiasm, effort and spirit. I hope that, as every year, many people will enjoy it.
